The traditional smoky sauna once served many purposes in Finnish life. It wasn’t just a place to get warm and cozy after a hard day’s work in winter. Babies were born in saunas, meat and fish were smoked there, illnesses were treated — it was truly a magical place! You can enjoy this rare and unforgettable experience safely under the guidance of our Sauna Master. A smoke sauna requires a special process to be enjoyed safely, and we do it every day. From our lakeside saunas, you can take a dip in the clear, safe, shallow waters right off the pier. The sandy lake bottom feels wonderful under your feet. All of this is open year-round: in the summer, it perfectly complements your sauna experience, and in the winter, you can feel the completely rejuvenating, healing sensation of icy water.
When you reserve the sauna, it’s yours alone. This intimate and private experience is the perfect highlight of your stay in Finland. Sometimes we organize open events, where you can meet other people.

As said before, we are located only 45-minutes drive from downtown Helsinki. Our smoke sauna is in Nuuksio National Park. It is an environment that nothing compares.
What is a smoke sauna?
A traditional Finnish smoke sauna (savusauna) is a truly special experience. Unlike regular saunas, it has no chimney. Instead, a large wood-burning stove heats up a pile of stones over several hours. As the fire burns, smoke fills the entire sauna room, soaking the wood with a rich, distinctive scent.
How long it takes to heat up a smoke sauna?
Once the stones are thoroughly heated—often after 4 to 6 hours—the fire is allowed to die down. The smoke is then carefully ventilated out of the sauna, carbon monoxide leaves with the first splash of water (when sauna can not be used) leaving behind clean, warm air and that unforgettable aroma. The sauna is now ready to use safely.
How to use a smoke sauna?
Guests enter the dim, peaceful space, where the residual heat from the stones creates a soft, enveloping warmth. Water is gently ladled onto the stones to produce steam (löyly), which increases humidity and enhances the soothing sensation on your skin.
Between sessions in the sauna, it’s common to cool off by stepping outside—often with a dip in a lake or a roll in the snow. This invigorating contrast between hot and cold is at the heart of the Finnish sauna tradition. With us you can even go ice swimming in the winter. Do you dare?!

A smoke sauna is always prepared by experienced hands, as it requires careful heating and proper ventilation to ensure a safe, pleasant experience. When you visit, our Sauna Master will oversee everything, so all you have to do is relax and enjoy this authentic slice of Finnish culture. And don’t worry, after the sauna is ready, you can enjoy it with your group alone and chill as never before.
